41 years ago today:

Ten year old Veronica made aliyah (immigrated to Israel) with her parents and five siblings from Sweden.

If I could travel back in time and whisper something in her ear, this is what I'd say:

Your life will never be the same.

The sooner you can stop daydreaming about returning to Sweden, the better.

The next two years will be the hardest and loneliest of your life. But they will also shape you for your future self.

You are about to experience extreme brainwashing. Everything you are told is true, is actually a lie.

Oh, and God is not a violent man.

But God was invented by violent men.

And violent men invented Israel.

Unfortunately no one will protect you.

So expecting them to, will only disappoint you.

It doesn't feel like it, but where it matters, you are stronger and smarter than them.

It's going to take a long time, but one day, you'll be okay.

And free.

(And if I'm allowed to spend a bit of extra time with her I'd explain these words:

Patriarchy

Occupation

Colonialism

Apartheid

Nakba

Power dynamics

Coercive control

Cult mentality

Gaslighting

And I'd explain:

When you hear the word "Arabs," they mean

Pa|estinians. And they were the people who lived on this land. You will be told they are dangerous. And that they are your enemy. And that they want to ki|| you. When in fact, it's been us who has been ki||ing them for forty years.

You will be told that you are little David and the "Arabs" are the scary giant Goliath. When in fact it's the direct opposite.

When you meet Pa|estinians, listen to them. Deeply listen.

Also...never stop wearing that top.
