I just saw a mother with a giant knife through her head. The blood was in her hair and down her dress.
I really didn’t need to see that.
But it’s Halloween so I’m meant to be okay with it.
But I’m not.
Last year I dropped off a meal at a friend’s place and got a full body shock when I turned to leave because it looked like a child covered in blood was pushed up against the window.
EXACTLY the same scene I had seen a few days earlier in Gaza.
And I read a post from a mother in a Facebook group asking if she’s over reacting to a neighbour that has a corpse hanging from a basketball hoop in the driveway. She’s had someone close to her end their life and she’s finding it really challenging.
I was sitting down to write this when my daughter popped in to chat. She had just come back from her placement at a local day care.
I told her how I had just seen a woman with a giant knife in her head.
Mum, they have a corpse at the front desk at the day care! And realistic looking bloody body parts.
Why does Halloween have to be so gruesome??
Like, I have made peace with the trick or treating and the lollies and even the whole American thing. I can totally see that it’s a fun community event that brings the neighbours out and all that. I have evolved since I first moved to Melbourne 15 years ago and was HORRIFIED at all of it.
But yeah…to have such little awareness of how it might impact others boggles my mind.
And to decorate a garden with scenes that is happening in Gaza right now…yeah…I just can’t.
That’s my soap box.
