Tell me it's an apartheid without telling me it's an apartheid

I'm an Israe|i citizen.
And I lived in Jerusalem for ten years.
Around the age of 15 I learned about apartheid from my South African social studies teacher.
I was horrified.
How could humans feel that they are superior to other humans?

Mrs Gilmore went on to explain that her husband had to join the military in South Africa and carried a broom instead of a weapon in protest.

Wow, I thought. That's such powerful symbolism.

Three years later, it was my turn to join the army. And after three weeks of basic training I lined up with my fellow IDF soldiers, with an Uzi strapped to my back.

Not for a moment did it cross my mind to protest.

Apartheid???? What apartheid????

That was something happening over there in South Africa. 

Little did I know that I was fully immersed in a deeply racist society.

I was completely blind to the injustices happening directly in front of me.

Fast forward 35 years and I took a photo of this ATM covered with fruit on my last visit to Israe|.

I love visiting the Old City. It's like stepping into history & art at the same time.
But that's my privilege speaking.

Because as an Israe|i I can flutter through the Old City at my whimsy.

Each quarter that it's divided into is available for my curiosity.

Christian, Muslim, Armenian and Jewish.

Fast forward to yesterday.

I see a photo of an ATM in the Old City. It's been covered in cardboard and the owner has scribbled in big letters:

"This belongs to a Jew. Do not damage. Thank you."

He has also added at the top: בס"ד

Which to me is a PERFECT example of how devotion to "God" and racism go hand in hand in the "Holy" Land.
