Veronica I’m with you in your reflection on friends and family not mentioning it. I can’t shut up about it and I just don’t understand that others are not doing the same. 🥺
I’m the same. I am glued to my phone ALL DAY catching up on everything that is happening in the world. The whole Gaza genocide has really affected me. But I have friends who remain totally unaware- they don’t watch the news, let alone try and find out what catastrophes have hit the world.
I have wanted to get off social media for a long time, but every time I paused even for a day, the silence on "things I need to know about" was deafening. So I return to insta/fb with all their banality and timewasting features, not to mention their actually evil aspects, because that is the only place I can find out what is going on. And btw a very similar thing is happening with climate crisis.... the true nature of the environmental ecocide and how quickly we are all going to face its consequences is largely hidden from view unless you seek it out. (And of course the two things are related....emissions from warfare are catastrophic). To be sure it is difficult to live in the constant knowledge of these things, but with friends who bemoan "I just can't think about it", I find myself having nothing to say. Awkward!
Totally agree. Was talking with someone the other day. They were saying how they couldn’t understand how so many people are totally unmoved by what is happening etc. I was saying that a lot of people are actually just not seeing what we are seeing online. That’s no excuse. That’s their choice to look away and it’s disgusting. But that is what’s happening.
I think we need to find new ways of getting people's attention. So many Aussies are wired to not see anything “political” which means we come from another angle. But that requires vulnerability.
I don’t use Facebook and instagram and my days are just as you described before loosing your accounts, so the algorithm works on substack too and the mass slaughter is all I get to see.
About the silence, I feel the same urge to bring the topic on but what I also am witnessing, including a bit with myself, is that people are distancing themselves from this issue because of keeping some sanity and getting on with their lives.
The matter is so overwhelming that it almost prevents you from living your life.
It is depressing, frustrating, makes you angry, I’m trying to find a balance between keeping informed, keep informing and live my life…
We used to have a weekly vigil and I would spend part of my week writing speeches and producing leaflets and posters.
We have stopped, unfortunately it’s not possible for many of us to keep that level of action and our own life at the same time, specially when you still need to work for a living.
I’m baffled by the silence of my friends and acquaintances. I want to discuss our opinions on Gaza/israel- I start off with “I’m pro Palestinian “. I’m met with a blank look and a change of topic. I cant understand it.
WTAF. I apologise, I been immersed in a few side quests lately and only just realised you were no longer on IG and FB. I came looking to see if you were aware and of The Jerusalem Post Summit coming to Australia in November and panicked when I couldn’t find you. Well you definitely must have ruffle a few Zionists feathers to get banned. I’m so sorry and so pissed off.

“watching the news,” won't inform you of the horrors of the genocide, being perpetrated upon the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank!
Yes it doesn't get mentioned at all
It's so confronting 💔
I hear you. I find the same.
3 years on and I’m still baffled by the silence.
It's just so wild
I hear you! And I’m sometimes astonished at what my friends see and what I see, on social media !
We apparently live in different worlds
REMEMBER:
"If you've ever wondered what you would have done in Nazi Germany, you're doing it now."
This is a quote (not mine) that has been shared on the internet since the gncide started.
Yes it's a powerful quote

Totally connected! 🤬

Thanks for being so active on this matter!

Yes, sure, I’m not an expert here 🙄 but I’ll try to send you same links
Welcome to a taste of wilful blindness Veronica.
Margaret Heffernan’s book ‘Wilful Blindness’ (and TedTalk etc.) was an eye opener and deeply clarifying for me.
I'll look for it!

Yes I am going through the same thing. I feel nervous to even talk about it anymore…it feels taboo in a way…it’s very strange
